Understanding Skilled Migration

Skilled migration visas are designed for individuals who have skills that Australia needs in its workforce. These visas provide a pathway to permanent residency, giving professionals the chance to live and work in Australia long-term. Unlike employer-sponsored visas, skilled migration visas are based on a points-tested system, where factors like your age, English proficiency, qualifications, and work experience all play a role in determining your eligibility.

There are three main visa subclasses under the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program:

  1. Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent Visa

    • Does not require employer or state sponsorship.

    • Ideal for highly skilled professionals with strong points scores.

    • Provides permanent residency directly.

  2. Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa

    • Requires nomination from an Australian state or territory government.

    • Applicants must commit to living in the nominating state for a certain period.

    • Offers permanent residency.

  3. Subclass 491 – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa

    • A five-year provisional visa that requires living and working in a regional area.

    • Can transition to permanent residency after meeting certain conditions.

    • Often has more flexible criteria for applicants compared to 189 or 190.
